Mogadishu, May 4, 2026: The Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism of the Federal Government of Somalia has officially concluded a two-day training workshop on preventing the dissemination of hate speech during electoral periods.
The training brought together 35 journalists from 21 media outlets, representing both public and private media institutions.
The primary objective of the workshop was to strengthen the role of the media in promoting transparent and credible elections, enhance journalists’ capacity to address and counter hate speech, and support peace and stability across the country.
Throughout the sessions, participants received in-depth training on media ethics during elections, fact-checking and verification, combating misinformation and disinformation, and the critical responsibility of the press in safeguarding social cohesion.
The Director General of the Ministry of Information, Mr. Abdullahi Hayir Duale, officially closed the training, urging journalists to report on elections responsibly and to refrain from content that could incite division or fuel tensions within society.
“The media plays a vital role in preserving peace and fostering social unity, particularly during election periods. It is essential to ensure that all disseminated information is factual, impartial, and does not undermine social harmony,” the Director General stated.
At the conclusion of the training, certificates were awarded to all participants in recognition of their commitment and contribution to advancing responsible journalism.
The training was jointly organized by the Ministry of Information and the United Nations Transitional Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS), which plays a key role in strengthening the capacity of journalists, supporting media development, and enhancing public awareness.
